How I Learned to Embrace the Akubra: A City-Slicker’s Journey

Who knew a hat could hold so much meaning and become a symbol of one’s identity?

Discovering the art of wearing an Akubra hat as a city-dweller

I’ve never been one to wear hats, especially with a head as large as mine. But when I received a brand-new Akubra in 2021, I saw it as a challenge to embrace this iconic piece of Australian heritage. However, finding the right fit proved to be a hurdle.

To start, I decided to change the color of the hat and opt for a larger size. A black Akubra made me resemble country singer Lee Kernaghan, so a sand-hued Cattleman-style hat suited me much better. Little did I know that there were various Akubra styles to choose from.

Venturing out into the countryside with my Akubra became a crucial part of my journey to becoming a hat-wearing pro. The hat joined me on trips to Cupitt’s Estate, Berry, and Shoalhaven Heads, remaining in pristine condition. It wasn’t until my visit to Uluru that I truly experienced the hat’s transformative powers.

At the launch of Wintjiri Wiru, a drone show showcasing an ancient Anangu story, I found myself seated next to Kaltukatjara man Steve Trindle. Over canapés, he couldn’t hold back from pointing out my Akubra faux pas. He kindly adjusted the hat, creating a stylish curl in the brim and sharing valuable advice on storage and positioning.

Following his guidance, I let the desert wind tousle my Akubra, leaving a dusting of red sand on its surface. Finally, it looks like my hat is living a life of adventure and authenticity.
